In the personal development space the new buss word is, "Self Awareness."
I am so glad that Jesus did not come for our personal development.
Although many will deny it, we often hear the Gospel of personal development from pulpits all across the globe. The following passage of scripture draws a line in the sand between personal and spiritual development:
Luke 9
51 Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem, 52 and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him. 53 But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem. 54 And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?”
55 But He turned and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of.
The line in the sand between personal development and spiritual development is spiritual development is always linked with words such as others, along with, among etc. In other words, the measure of one's spiritual development is determined by one's interaction with another.
When Jesus said, "You do not know what manner of spirit you are of," He was really saying, you don't even realize that your attitude is held subconsciously and is affecting the way you feel and think about others around you (aka unconscious bias).
So one can be quit self aware in the pulpit and act aloof once service is over.
Ask me how I know?
As I journey towards Spiritual Maturity I have come to the conclusion that Spiritual Development is not a program (but is a way of life, for the rest of your life).
